♦ Suffixe, du lat. -arius, -arium, -aria, se joignant à des noms pour former des noms de métier comme barbier, cordonnier, épicier, banquier, magasinier, chaisière…, des noms d'arbres fruitiers comme prunier, cerisier…, des noms exprimant un contenant tels : cendrier, encrier, cafetière, bonbonnière, tabatière, glacière…, des adjectifs comme printanier, hospitalier, buissonnière, grossier, coutumier. — REM. Le suffixe -ier s'est réduit en -er après g et ch (mensongier [vx], mensonger).
0 (…) un suffixe peut exprimer diverses idées fort différentes : ier est dans ce cas : un chapelier fait des chapeaux, mais un voiturier conduit les voitures, un cuirassier porte une cuirasse, un geôlier tient en geôle les prisonniers qui sont dans la prison, comme les pigeons et les colombes dans le colombier.
